Recipe Profitability
Recipe Profitability lists every recipe with its selling price, ingredient cost, margin and margin percentage, sortable from most to least profitable, with a clear split between recipes that have costing data set up and ones that still need it — so you know exactly which dishes are quietly losing you money and which recipes need attention before you can trust the numbers.
Overview
Each row shows a recipe's Name, Cost (from its ingredient/recipe costing), Margin (price minus cost) and Margin % — visualised with a colour-coded bar (green ≥50%, amber 25–49%, red below 25%) so weak-margin dishes stand out immediately.
A recipe without ingredient costing set up shows as "—" for margin and is flagged separately as Uncosted, rather than being silently treated as zero cost or excluded from the list.
Filter between All, Costed and Uncosted recipes — use Uncosted as a straightforward checklist of which recipes still need their ingredients and quantities entered before their margins can be trusted.
Sort ascending or descending by margin % to quickly find your best performers (for promotion) and your weakest ones (for repricing or portion-cost review).
A search box filters the list by recipe name for restaurants with a large menu.
Before You Start
- You must have the Recipe Costing feature enabled on your plan.
- Recipes need ingredient costing (a recipe/ingredient list with quantities and costs) entered before they show a meaningful margin — an uncosted recipe will show as "—" until this is done.
Step-by-Step Guide
1 Review your weakest-margin dishes
- Open Recipe Profitability and sort ascending by margin %.
- Review the lowest-margin costed recipes at the top of the sorted list.
- For each, decide whether to raise the price, reduce portion size, or find a cheaper ingredient substitute.
2 Find and fix uncosted recipes
- Switch the filter to "Uncosted".
- For each recipe listed, go to its recipe/ingredient setup and enter the ingredients and quantities that make it up.
- Return to this page — once costed, the recipe will show its calculated margin and margin %.
3 Search for a specific dish's margin
- Type the dish name into the search box.
- Review its Cost, Margin and Margin % directly.
Every Field & Button, Explained
| Field / Button | What it does |
|---|---|
Cost | The recipe's total ingredient cost, calculated from its recipe/ingredient list and quantities. |
Margin / Margin % | Selling price minus Cost, and that margin expressed as a percentage of price; colour-coded green/amber/red by threshold. |
Costed / Uncosted filter | Costed recipes have ingredient data set up and show a real margin; Uncosted recipes show "—" until their recipe/ingredient list is entered. |
Sort (ascending/descending) | Orders the list by margin % to surface either your best or your weakest performers first. |
Tips & Best Practices
- Treat the Uncosted filter as an onboarding checklist for new menu items — a dish shouldn't stay on the menu indefinitely without its margin being known.
- Recheck this report whenever ingredient prices change materially (a supplier price increase) — margins here are only as current as the ingredient costs behind each recipe.
- Use the colour-coded margin bar as a quick visual scan across a large menu rather than reading every percentage number individually.
